It’s little wonder that Senior Artist Massimo Mazzotta Møller, having grown up in the cultural epicentre of Rome, was inspired to choose a career immersed in beauty. “My artistry is deeply influenced by big painters like Caravaggio, Michelangelo and other names from the Renaissance and Baroque periods,” he says in reverence of what his hometown produced.
The old masters and architecture of the city inspired in him an early love for drawing and painting, but he admits, “It was the Italian women who inspired me to translate my interests into makeup too.” He compulsively drew portraits of women in art school until the chance to transfer his artistry onto women instead tempted him away. He joined M·A·C in 2009, drawn in by the breadth of possibilities presented by the colour selection, and stayed with the M·A·C family even after leaving Italy.
Massimo describes himself as spontaneous – a convenient trait, considering that embracing surprises is all but required for any Senior Artist, especially during fashion week. To deal with the backstage chaos, “I have to call upon my mantra: Having control is just an illusion,” he half-jokes. With an average of six to eight runway shows per week in each city he visits, Massimo is inevitably tasked with a handful of unexpected and unorthodox assignments each year. The hardest? Creating a peel-off skin effect for a particularly dark, avante-garde Barbara I Gongini show.
When given free reign, Massimo’s artistry tends toward minimalism infused with a single awe-inducing element. He is most often drawn toward eyes as the central focus of his work, sometimes creating graphic drama with Pro Longwear Fluidline in Blacktrack or elongating them in an iconic fashion with Haute & Naughty Lash and smudged Chromagraphic Pencil. He also counts on M·A·C Studio Finish SPF 35 Concealer, Eye Pencil in Coffee and Cream Colour Base in Tint – essential for brightening and adding depth around eyes. His favourite features are, after all, the windows to the soul. Bringing out their truth is part of what makes Massimo most grateful to be an artist: “Connecting with the face in front of you and using makeup to enhance the story behind.”
